Vein Treatment Procedures
Laser Ablation
Laser ablation uses targeted laser energy to close the vein. The laser energy minimizes the vein walls, shrinking them and closing the faulty vein so that the blood cannot flow through it. This eliminates the bulging of the vein at its source. After the treatment, the blood in the faulty veins will be diverted to the many normal veins in the leg.
Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (USGS)
This is the injection of sclerosant fluid under ultrasound guidance in order to close down any remaining segments of diseased veins that can’t be closed by laser ablation. After Laser Ablation you will be reassessed by ultrasound to determine if any remaining segments of veins are present. If there are persistent problems, you may need USGS. After treatment, compression hose are worn for several days and you may return to normal activity immediately; however rigorous exercise is not recommended.
Cosmetic Sclerotherapy
When spider veins are present and there are no other symptoms of venous insufficiency such as aching, pain, swelling, or skin discoloration, then the condition is considered cosmetic. We treat most spider veins with sclerosant fluid. Sclerosant fluid is injected directly in the veins with a tiny needle causing them to shut down. Depending on the number of veins and the difficulty of access appointments can take up to an hour. Frequently several visits are required to obtain an 80% improvement overall. Compression hose are worn after the procedure for several days.
Phlebectomy
This is the physical removal of varicose veins that are bulging on the skin surface. A laser ablation of the saphenous vein is often followed by a micro incisional phlebectomy to remove remaining surface varicosities. This is also considered a minimally invasive procedure and is different from “vein stripping”, which is no longer performed in most vein treatment centers. The procedure requires no sedation. Local tumescent fluid is used to numb the area around the bulging surface veins, then sections of the diseased vein are removed. This takes 10 to 15 minutes in most cases. Afterward, compression hose are worn and you may return to normal activities, but not rigorous exercise until cleared by your doctor.
